Family Literacy Day takes place every year on January 27 and is a day to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
To recognize the day, Ridgewood Public School (RPS) hosted their first annual Family Literacy Day by inviting students, parents/guardians, friends, and staff to the school for a fun-filled day of celebrating literacy.
The morning kicked off with a community breakfast, hosted by the Coboconk Lions Club. Community partners were present to share information about their services, including the Kawartha Lakes Public Library, the Ontario Provincial Police, the EarlyON Centre, the Boys and Girls Club, and local authors, Hayley Winterburn, and Publishing House Fitzhenry and Whiteside Limited.
Next, families, students, and guests were invited to take part in literacy learning through rotary stations. Students were given a passport to complete as they travelled from classroom to classroom taking part in various literacy-based activities, including social media safety, alphabet and sight word bingo, word chains, Chinese calligraphy, writing in braille, sight words scavenger hunt, and literacy in the early years. At the end of the day, the passports were collected and students’ names were put in a draw to win different literacy-themed prizes.
“Family Literacy Day is a wonderful reminder that learning starts at home and grows through strong connections between families, schools, and the community. By working together, we create a strong foundation for our childrens’ success, both in school and in life,” said RPS principal, Jane Austin.
